Each year, NFU Mutual gives four students the chance to receive a £3000 bursary.
The bursary is given to soon-to-be students enrolling on their first year of BSc Agriculture or BSc Farm Business Management courses in the UK.
Harper Adams student Ben Chilman, who received the NFU Mutual Agricultural Undergraduate Award last year, explains how it has benefited him: “Financially, it's been huge. You've got a big firm, NFU Mutual, behind you and backing you.
"I definitely think that the way modern farms are going to have to adapt, is by looking at their finances so much closer, so that's where I see the business side of the course helping."
Ben is studying BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Farm Business Management and will be returning later in September for his second year of studies. Speaking to Jimmy Doherty, television presenter, and Will Evans, voice of the 'Rock and Roll Farming' podcast, Ben said that in the future he aims to play a role in communicating the benefits of agriculture to the public and the hard work that goes into producing the food we eat.
The bursary is designed to encourage new talent to enter the industry and help students with the cost of tuition, work experience, and living costs. NFU Mutual aims to help more students like Ben in the future.
Ben appeared in September's issue of the NFU's British Farmer and Grower magazine.
To be eligible to apply for the award, you need to meet the criteria below:
- You have been accepted (or provisionally accepted) on to an undergraduate agricultural course in the UK commencing autumn 2019.
- Your course features an element of business management. This could involve modules such as farm management and rural marketing.
- You have experience supporting your local farming community.
There is still time to apply for the bursary. https://www.nfumutual.co.uk/news-and-stories/undergraduate-award/. Applications close September 27.
